Broadcasters will support change to kick-off time

UK broadcasters and sponsors of the controversial live Sunday night Football League matches say they will support any alteration to the kick-off time.

The first game screened by the day-old ITV Sport channel was marred when a Burnley player was confronted on the pitch by a Sheffield Wednesday fan.
Clarets boss Stan Ternent then burst onto the field to restrain another fan, paving the way for criticism of the 6.15pm kick-off time that allowed supporters to drink through the day.
It was an ugly start to the Division One season, prompting fears over this Sunday's midlands derby between Coventry and Wolves at Highfield Road, and the October 7 steel city showdown between Wednesday and Sheffield United at Hillsborough.
Broadcasters ITV Digital insist they will back any alterations to the kick-off times, while Football League sponsors Nationwide have emphasised the importance of fans' safety.
ITV Digital spokesman Mark Woods said: "When the fixture list comes out at the start of the season, we liaise with clubs and police forces. It's a big consultation process.
"Public order is a police matter and we'll take any advice they give. The police have got the powers to move fixtures - and we abide by what the police decide.
"If they give us advice, we will stick by it. There was no trouble at the Manchester City game [against Watford at Maine Road], with 34,000 fans there, the day before."
Nationwide spokesman Chris Hull said: "These instances are dealt with by the Football League and Football Association, in conjunction with the clubs involved.
"We as sponsors accept that the well being of supporters is of paramount importance. We'll support the authorities in whatever decision they take."
