The Maris family filed a nine-page motion Monday asking Alachua Circuit Judge R.A. "Buzzy" Green to reinstate the original jury verdict of $139.7 million. The family had accused Anheuser-Busch of improperly taking away a beer distributorship.
Green had reduced the award to $50 million earlier this month.
Meanwhile, St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch asked the judge on Monday to overturn the entire verdict. A 120-page motion that the company filed with the judge seeks either a directed verdict in the company's favor, a dismissal of the case or a new trial, a company spokesman said.
The jury ruled on Aug. 3 that the company illegally took away a Gainesville-Ocala beer distributorship that the family had run since Maris's death in 1985.
Maris, who broke Babe Ruth's single-season home run record in 1961 when he 61 homers for the New York Yankees, was given the distributorship by August Busch Jr., the then-owner of Anheuser-Busch and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, for helping the Cardinals win the World Series in 1967.
During the trial, the company argued that the Maris family had violated various terms of their contract.
The family of baseball legend Roger Maris and brewing giant Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. are both contesting a decision that awarded the family $50 million in a Florida lawsuit against the Budweiser brewer.
