Winning from pole at unprecedented level in Formula One

Jenson Button won the Formula One Grand Prix of Monaco on Sunday, 24 May. It was the fifth race out of six this season (83%) in which the driver starting in pole position had gone on to win.

  • If this pattern continues, the 2009 Grand Prix season will break the record for most F1 races won from pole position.
  • In 1991, a record 12 of the 16 F1 races (75%) were won by the driver beginning on pole.
  • Monaco is the Grand Prix won most frequently from pole position. Twenty-three of the 56 Monaco Grands Prix have been won by the qualification winner.
