On Sunday, 26 July, Lance Armstrong finished in third place in the general classification of the 2009 Tour de France. With his eighth podium finish the American has equalled the all-time record held by Raymond Poulidor since 1976.
- Armstrong won the Tour seven times between 1999 and 2005. Poulidor, however, never won the race. He finished runner-up three times and finished third five times between 1962 and 1976.
- At the age of 37 years and 311 days, Armstrong also became the second oldest rider to record a top three finish. In 1976, Poulidor (40-094) was the only rider who was older than Armstrong when he last finished on the podium in Paris.
