On Monday this week England launched its bid to host football’s 2018 World Cup. Prince William and Gordon Brown joined David Beckham and FA Chairman Lord Triesman at the official launch at Wembley Stadium, promising a campaign that would focus on the quality of English stadiums and the passion of English fans.
According to this research from IFM Sports Marketing Surveys, public support for England’s bid amongst the general public is strong. 83 per cent of adult football fans in the UK are in favour of England hosting the event. Non-football fans are positive too – over a third are in favour of the bid.
And why the strong support? For some, it would appear to be driven by their desire to experience the thrills of 1966 – over 20 per cent believe that England are more likely to win the World Cup if we host the event. Others may believe the football bid shows that England is become a hub for international sport – with the Olympics coming to London in 2012, the English Rugby Football Union has also launched a bid to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Should both bids be successful, it could represent England hosting the three major global sporting events in the space of 6 years.
